PROVISIONAL GO-AHEAD FOR CHINOOK PURCHASE

Wednesday 5 May 2010

Britain is on course to buy 12 Boeing Chinook F-model helicopters and fit them out with homegrown cockpit technology, although the decision can't be formally approved until after the general election.

The intention is to buy 10 more Chinooks and replace 2 lost in Afghanistan last year initially.  Under a 2009 plan the RAF will eventually purchase 24 new Chinooks

The overall program will be reviewed in the upcoming strategic defence review, pledged by all three political parties.
