ALLERTON SUPPLIES STEEL FOR HIGHLAND BRIDGE

NDI member company Allerton Steel has supplied the steel for a new bridge on a remote road in the Scottish Highlands.
Allerton Steel fabricated the steelwork for a replacement bridge at Loch Ba, on Rannoch Moor, as part of the A82 upgrade scheme for Transport Scotland.
The composite deck bridge was constructed from weathering grade steel, with six plate girders spanning 32m and weighing 55 tonnes. The bridge beams were pre-fabricated as three pairs landing on to four crosshead beams at the piers. The final six span beams were then placed as individual items.
The structure had sitewelded splices to allow for transport restrictions enroute to the site.
The work was done for RJ McLeod, civil contractor on the £2.2m scheme to replace the existing three-span bridge.
Paul Robinson, bridges manager for Allerton Steel, said: “On my first visit to the site there was a foot of snow on the ground and temperatures of minus 12 degrees C, and due to the remoteness of the site we were concerned.
“By comparison, on the day the bridge was installed, the weather was kind to us and our first project with RJ McLeod went very well.”
Tom Brodie, RJ McLeod contracts manager, said: “Allerton has performed well on this job, working with us to deliver the steelwork on time, and I look forward to working with them again.”
The scheme will be completed later this year.
