STADIUM SERVICE IS SO FLEXIBLE

Wednesday 23 June 2010

An NDI member company is bucking the trend and securing new custom in a challenging economy, writes The Journal

Stadium Packing Services Ltd (SPS) is an export packing and shipping business – shipping a whole variety of cargo by land, air and sea.

The company operates from a 45,000sq ft facility, situated on a secure 10-acre site within easy reach of the A1.

Recent investment in new machinery and a complete restructure of process flows within the factory has ensured the business can maximise the working day and further reduce lead times at no additional cost to its customers.

Other benefits include greater flexibility within all areas of production, ensuring unforeseen, highly reactive contracts can now be undertaken with greater confidence and have little inconvenience to existing activities.

SPS is clearly benefiting from a business strategy that puts service first, whilst maintaining a competitive approach through investment, training and working practices.

Although SPS enjoys the benefit of a strong and loyal customer base exporting to numerous market sectors, Brian Smith, SPS general manager, was quick to dispel any thoughts of complacency.

He said: “Our customers expect a quality product with outstanding service and expertise, so being at the end of the manufacturing chain can place a huge responsibility on the packaging company to ensure delivery deadlines are achieved.

“SPS offer a complete one-stop shop in terms of packing, storage and logistics and by working in partnership with the customer, we find this can introduce a degree of ownership, creating a determination not to let anybody down.”

SPS has seen a dramatic increase in off-site working recently, whereby customers have requested product to be packed and despatched from their own premises literally as it comes off the production line or completes a satisfactory inspection.

“It is essential that our mobile packing teams are adequately equipped and fully supported to reduce unnecessary travel time or waiting time whilst working off site.

“This approach allows us to react immediately to the unexpected, particularly when working at a customers premises,” said Mr Smith.

Although SPS is now attracting interest from exporters outside of the North East, Mr Smith added: “We remain determined not to neglect our current customer needs and by adopting a controlled and methodical approach to our business development we will ensure we continue to put these customers first.”

SPS is a division of British Engines Ltd (BEL) and has the financial stability of a privately owned, successful business established in 1922.

The group comprises of a number of engineering divisions manufacturing products such as high pressure valves, actuators and controls, cable glands and connectors, hydraulic pumps and motors, plus electromagnetic clutches and brakes used in fire activation systems.
